Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

roomthily:

In the Star Trek world, computers are utility devices. You don’t use them, you do things and the computer is the device that does them, just like you don’t really “use” the stove, you cook dinner and you might use the stove or the oven or the crock pot or the microwave or the refrigerator. You don’t have to know how to “use” the computer, or shouldn’t, any more than you should have to know how to “use” electricity to turn on your lights. Nobody has to understand electrical wiring to live in a house with electricity. Why should you have to understand the guts of a computer to use it?

Star Trek tells us people use computers to do stuff. People in Star Trek use keyboard-type things at work, but they don’t have keyboards in their bedroom. Kirk has a screen but no keyboard. If he wants the computer to do something, he tells it: “Computer, plot a course to Starbase Nine”. That’s you and your iPhone and verbal commands and the Maps app. Steve Jobs had the vision to make that happen. Now he’s making the no-keyboards thing happen (complete with 90s-era Star Trek touch interfaces for the iPhone and iPad).

[…]

All this was sparked by a rumination on the iPad and having a lot of friends say it wasn’t a compelling buy for them. It’s not for me either in the current iteration, but I’m enough of a techie that this device isn’t really aimed at me. I keep saying it’s a computer for people who hate computers, but even that’s a wrong answer. It’s a consumer device for people who hate computers but like things computers can do. Even if it’s a failure—and I don’t think it will be—it’s a visionary product that I don’t expect people with a strong tech over design orientation to want (or grok, even if they intellectually get it). The question is whether people want that vision.

Don’t listen to the nay-sayers.  The iPad is the future of computing.  I think even my anti-tech Mom could use it!

Excitement and Anticipation

It’s odd to me, but four unrelated people have mentioned the forthcoming Apple announcement tomorrow.  One even said it’s like Christmas Eve!  I’m intrigued with what their next product will be, but I’d rather have a Hand-Phaser, Tricorder, or my own backyard monorail.
